Basketball Team Wins Tournament

7th Graders Win Inaugural Holy Spirit/St. Frances Cabrini Event
February 3-5, the 7th grade boys basketball team competed in the 16-team, First Annual Holy Spirit/St Frances Cabrini Tournament. Having had terrific team success thus far, the boys went into the tournament with great expectations. The first round pitted the Saints against a good St Catherine’s team. There were standout performances by Brian P. with 6pts, Cameron B. with 10Pts, and Michael B. scoring 18 of his 23 points in the first half. The Saints went on to beat St Catherine’s 67-51.

The Second round the Saints faced a St Leo’s team that fought hard and played a fast paced style of basketball had the Saints trailing at halftime by one. Cameron decided to take the game into his own hands scoring 15 of his game high 18 points in the 3rd period to pull ahead and lead his team to a 56-46 win to get the Saints into the final four.

Saturday’s semi-final round put the Saints up against the Bengals of St Martins. Led by Matthew K., and his 21 points in the first half, Gunnar W. attacking the boards and contributing with tough scoring chances the Saints were able to cruise into the final beating the Bengals 64-24.

The championship game matchup had more than the first place trophy on the line as the Saints had to play against Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit has been the team that has been a thorn in the side of the Saints beating them every time they have played over the past 2 years. Nervousness seemed to show as the Saints scored a season low 11 points in the first quarter. The second quarter would be a different story as Michael B. hit 2 3 pointers and added 2 more points, Cameron added 9 points to give the Saints a lead at the half. The second half saw Michael B. hit 2 more 3s and Matthew K. adding a 3 pointer as the Saints took a lead that would not dissipate. Taking home the championship winning 54-41.

Matthew K. took home Tournament MVP honors and Cameron B. took home ALL-Tourney honors. However great play and from Jack L., Gunnar W., Charles G., Brian P., Frank A., Iliyan V. and Shoaib V. helped this Saint Andrews team capture a championship they will never forget.
